Day 5.

Swanage to Bournemouth

The day started with a steady climb out of Swanage, up the cliff and towards Old Harry Rocks. This point marks the end of the Jurassic Coast. For our walk it marked the end of the cliff top walking because from there we dropped down through woodland to the beach to continue around Studland.

After a while on the beach and a small bit of rockpool navigation we moved slightly inland to walk through heath and towards South Haven Point, aka Shell Bay. This marked the official eastern end of the South West Coast Path. It is also the place where the chain link ferry crosses Poole Harbour to Sandbanks.

After the crossing on the ferry (which is free for foot passengers in that direction) we soon found our way back to the sandy beaches of Poole.

It felt like the right time to release our feet from our boots and go for a little paddle in the sea to cool down, plus feel the therapeutic massage of the soft beach sand between the toes.

The weather continued to be stunning (as it has been throughout) and despite the forecast on our phones saying some rain was likely every day, we barely had a cloud in the sky the whole time. It has been super-warm for late March and the first day of April.

After quite a while on the beach it felt like the time had come to boot up for the final time and push on for the last mile or so and to our hotel for the night. We went to dinner via where we had parked the car on Thursday and picked up the spare clothes which we didn't carry with us. It feels strange wearing normal trousers again - made all the more noticeable because of the calf muscle sunburn from having been wearing shorts the whole time and accidentally neglecting that patch with the sun lotion.

Now here in Bournemouth we are already planning some more walking over Easter in Somerset. We have hit the 21% mark on our "walk 500 miles in 2019" challenge we decided to do this year. This Bridport-to-Bournemouth walk has been a significant chunk of that total. We had done a few day walks in London in January, but this was the first serious dent in the 500 mile target.

Only 392.5 miles left to walk by the end of the year!

Day 4.

Lulworth Cove to Corfe Castle (and Swanage)

Heading up to the top of Bindon Hill from Lulworth Cove, it wasn't long before we entered the Lulworth Ranges. Being an active military firing range it is only possible to walk this section of the South West Coast Path when the red flags are not flying. Luckily for us, this was one of the days the range walks were open to the public.

After a short stretch along the top of the hill, there were a few seriously steep downs and back ups once we rejoined the cliff edge path. A couple of miles short of Kimmeridge Bay we took the path inland to the abandoned village of Tyneham.

Tyneham is within the firing range land so it is also only possible to visit when the ranges are open. The village was requisitioned by the army in 1943 to help with the war and was never returned to the people that used to live there. Consequently, the church, school, farm buildings, cottages, post office, laundry and all the other buildings you'd expect to find in a 1940s Dorset village were left frozen in time and for nature to reclaim. It is a fascinating ghost village and with the aid of plenty of old photographs it brings alive the history of the place.

From Tyneham we climbed back up to the ridgeway and made faster progress on easier terrain. The views up on the ridge were amazing on all sides. Although we were no longer actually on the South West Coast Path, this detour significantly aided our progress to make it in time to the end of today's walk.

The reason the end of the walk was somewhat time-critical was because we had decided to get to Corfe Castle and catch the last steam train down to Swanage, our final destination and the stop for the night.

We've slightly cheated a little bit here by having a gap in the walk and having missed out some of the coast path, but it just means there will be a reason to come back and complete the bits that we didn't do this time. Not that there needs to be much incentive to come back!

Tomorrow is the final day and we return to the South West Coast Path to take us to its eastern end point.
- - -

Day 3.

Weymouth to Lulworth Cove

The morning began with a pre-breakfast trip to the launderette to refresh our walking clothes. We are carrying only enough clothes for 2 days at a time. We learned the trick of finding a launderette en route when doing our Totnes to Lands End trek in 2014.

Today's walk began with a reasonably steady climb out of Weymouth Bay. Impressive scenes of recent and not-so-recent cliff falls were a recurring theme of the day, reminding us of how the relentless process of erosion is constantly dynamically changing the coastline. This made quite a stark change from yesterday where the offshore Chesil Bank had protected most of the shoreline we had been walking along.

For lunch we stopped on the beach just before arriving at Ringstead, and then found the only shop on the path and bought an ice cream.

The climbs and the descents got increasingly steep as we made our way closer to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.

At Durdle Door we paused on the cliff top to have the rest of our lunch. Being a beautiful Saturday the honeypot site of Durdle Door was absolutely packed.

The final half an hour of walking to Lulworth Cove felt a bit like we had joined a mass--pilgrimage or large coach tour. The path was wide but it still felt crowded.

Arriving at lulworth we found the hotel for the night and following a small problem with their hot water we got upgraded from the "attic room" to the special suite with its own private garden (and plenty of hot water). Showers were much-needed following a busy and hot walk. We also had to get aftersun lotion to treat our angry calves (the bit of our bodies we had forgotten to apply suncream to.

In total it was just over 11 miles, not including a small loop around the cove and neighbouring Star Hole.

We had a delicious dinner at Rudds and now very happily tired ready for what looks like another fairly challenging day tomorrow.

Day 2.

Abbotsbury to Weymouth

Starting out from the b&b after a hearty breakfast, we headed up the hill to St Catherine's Chapel which sits above Abbotsbury. From there the views were stunning to the coast and inland. The ridgeway (an alternative route) sits even higher the other side of the village.

Beyond the swannery, we could see Chesil Beach and the fleet - a special wildlife conservation area. The fleet is the name of the lagoon between Chesil Bank and the mainland. The water at the Abbotsbury end is not as salty or tidal because of the stream running into it and hence the haven for birds and its protected status.

The next part of the walk was inland through rolling fields and skirting woodland. When we rejoined the fleet it was almost time for a spot of lunch and we stopped at the conveniently-placed Moonfleet Manor for a panini and a slice of Dorset apple cake.

We continued walking towards Weymouth along the fleet, with Chesil bank permanently to the right hand side, past lots of lovely coves and bays.

Neither it us had noticed before, but gorse in flower has the distinct smell of coconut about it - a bit like a coconutty suncream. We were sstarting to wish we had some suncream to put on. The glorious day without much shade was pleasantly welcome but much unexpected.

At Ferry Bridge (the connection from Wyke Regis to the Isle of Portland) we decided to jump on a bus for the last couple of miles to Weymouth and to check in to our guest house for the night.

That leg of the walk was 12.5 miles to Ferry Bridge.

After a brief pause and dropping off our bags, we returned by bus to Ferry Bridge and took it about a mile or so further onto Portland itself. From there we saw a super sunset across the sea. We walked up on to Chesil bank, and at this end the pebbles are a lot bigger which makes it easier to walk on and get a footing. Apparently pirates landing on Chesil bank knew which part of it they had landed on by the pebble size.

Leaving Portland behind via the Ferry Bridge we picked up the Rodwell trailway (a former railway line now a cycle and footpath). By this point it had got dark so we walked for a couple of miles, accompanied by bats flying back and forth, into Weymouth town centre. We stopped for dinner before returning to our b&b, rather satisfyingly tired.

The 'bonus' second section of today's walk added another 5.5 miles, bringing today's total to 18 miles.

This time it's a 5-day walk from Bridport to Bournemouth. The walk connects with our 2013 trek from London to Totnes.

Day 1

Bridport to Abbotsbury

28 March 2019

Starting with a train from Bournemouth to Dorchester, then a bus to Bridport, we joined our previous London-Totnes walk for the first couple of miles from Bridport to West Bay.

In 2013 we headed west from West Bay and on to Lyme Regis. This time we headed East.

First stop was in an interesting flea market before climbing up a steep hill out of West Bay.

We walked along some very nice cliffs which were very up-down for quite a few miles, following the stunning coastline.

We headed inland to Burton Bradstock and found The Three Horseshoes pub where we had a great tasty lunch of soup and sandwiches.

Back on to the coast path and at times had to follow the shoreline. This was hard-going underfoot because the shingle was so small and each step felt like the effort of four steps.

We arrived at Abbotsbury and found the B&b for the night, the Ilchester Arms.

After a brief rest we took a sunset stroll around the village, seeing some remains of the abbey and England's largest barn!

Walking the North Downs Way

The North Downs Way national trail has featured in a few of our training walks already and we previously reached as far as Guildford in the westerly direction. The final length of the trail is about 10 miles farther west to Farnham. This means we've done all of the North Downs Way between Guildford and Hollingbourne, with the Guildford-Farnham part still to finish in the west, and from Hollingbourne-Dover still to cover in the south east.

24 May 2015

We jumped on a train from London Waterloo to Guildford where we followed the River along the route which will be part of the actual London to Brighton Trek on the 27th June. Where this meets the North Downs Way we turned off the river path and headed in the direction of Farnham.

The first 12 miles to Farnham took us through bluebell woods (pictured above) and sandy lanes. At Farnham station we switched from the North Downs Way to a combination of local walks heading for MOD land, eventually ending in Fleet, another 14 miles further.

When we got to Fleet Pond nature reserve we realised a train from Fleet back to London Waterloo was due in the next 5 minutes so we finished our 26 mile walk with a light jog, followed by a more serious run when we spotted the train was on the other platform and we needed to run over the footbridge to get to it!

Today's walk has almost very nearly coincided with part of the route we walked on our first charity walk adventure from London to Devon, where we followed the Three Castles Path for 3 of the days. We are planning a future walk to join up the end of this walk from Fleet, heading to Winchfield and the Basingstoke canal. But that's for another time!

We are in training for a mammoth charity walk for the British Heart Foundation - the LONDON to BRIGHTON TREK 2015. It is 100 km to be completed within 30 hours, walking through the day and night.

We're doing plenty of long walks at the moment to train for this large undertaking!

Here is one to share with you.

If you enjoy walking, this walk is a stunning route through the West Sussex countryside. We did it in May, when the bluebells were out. The walk crosses the appropriately-named Bluebell Railway (a preserved steam railway) a couple of times.

It's a circular walk so it can be started anywhere and you could shorten it if 23 miles is to your taste (if you're not in training for a trek!). We started in the village of West Hoathly, which is not far from the M23 Crawley/Gatwick.

Setting off from West Hoathly, we walked clockwise towards East Grinstead, then followed a straight trailway to Forest Row, before heading south and west to Horsted Keynes, then back round to the start point at West Hoathly.

For the walkers out there, click the map below to view the track we created using Viewranger (a GPS tracking app).
Hello blog readers!

A couple of weeks ago we got back out walking again and began our training for this year's charity walk challenge.

We've gradually been doing day-long sections of the North Downs Way in Kent and Surrey.

This time the section was an 18 mile walk in the snow, wind and rain from Betchworth to Guildford, another section of the North Downs Way. Soon we will have connected up from Strood in the East with Farnham (and beyond, to join the route of our 2013 London to Devon walk).

It's all in preparation for a big challenge of a walk later in the year. More about that soon!

There was a dramatic finish (more about that in a minute).

Thank you to everyone that has sponsored us and helped us out along the way. The sponsorship page will stay open for the next few months at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/walklandsend

Penzance to Lands End

We made the decision to roll the last two days into one and push onwards to Lands End before the heavy rain and strong wind that was forecast for the next day.

We were also up against the light, as we had to complete before sunset.

It was a 'Challenge Anneka' -style race against the clock, minus the chopper and that 4x4 buggy inside a lorry that she had.

Right up until the last 2 miles the weather was on our side and we made good time. We had an hour to go until it would be dark. But... Then the rain started. The rain really started. And the wind was gusting so fiercely that the rain stung as it hit our faces.

We took a bridleway that was not so near the cliff edge to be on the safe side.

When we finally made it to Lands End we just about managed a bedraggled photo at the Lands End sign post, but we didn't hang around for very long. We ran for cover in the nearby Lands End Hotel bar for a celebratory pint!

It's about 5 miles coast-to-coast across this thinnest part of Cornwall.

At Marazion we saw St Michael's Mount, tide in, so no chance of hopping across the causeway for a look around.

From a perfect blue sky in the morning on the north coast, by the time we'd reached St Michael's Mount just a couple of hours later the clouds had rolled in and the forecast was looking pretty bad for later on.

We met a lady in Marazion that told us her story about Macmillan helping her when she had a brain tumour 4 years ago. She has just been for a check up with her specialist who said she didn't need another appointment for a year. A great success story. We've heard so many great stories about the charities that we are walking for, and what they mean to so many people.

Please support the excellent work of Macmillan and RMH Bristol by sponsoring our walk here: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/walklandsend

When we reached Penzance we made the decision to push onwards to Land's End and combine the two last days into one. We'd always factored in flexibility with the days in case of delays, bad weather, or any other problems, but so far we were on track and on good form so we thought we would be able to make the last 9 miles before the weather closed in on us and before it got dark.

Did we make it? Was it possible? Find out in the next installment of the blog!

Here are a few photos from the Hayle - Penzance walk:

Today was no exception. After every big climb there was a steep drop back to nearly sea level.

Erosion on this stretch of coastline was the other recurring theme. There were lots of diversions away from the previously marked path, often borrowing land from a farmer's field, or sending us down a lane.

As our destination of Hayle got nearer, the landscape changed from dramatic cliffs to more gently undulating sand dunes

We passed seal watchers, surfers, bird spotters, walkers, joggers, kite fliers, and every type of coastal being you can imagine.

Everyone we have met has been so friendly and when they find out we're doing a charity walk they almost always want to donate some money to the fundraising pot. All those spare bits of change add up and it all helps. Thank you to all the people that have donated this way.

Thanks to everyone that has already donated via the Virgin Money Giving page, and got those that haven't here's the link: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/walklandsend

We're pushing onwards towards Land's End...

After leaving Newquay we headed west to the estuary of the River Gannel. We had to head upstream to a different bridge because the place we were planning to cross wasn't passable.

This diversion early on meant we found ourselves further inland than planned so we worked out a new route to meet the coast path at Perranporth.

To say the coastline is dramatic is a big understatement. There were a lot of landslips and the narrow rocky coast path is right on the edge of the cliff in places. The south west coast path is a well-managed national trail but it seems like bits of it might be getting eroded faster than alternative routes can be put in place.

The day ended with a stunning sunset. Here are some photos to summarise the day...

It seems like there are quite a few of these trailways in Cornwall; many railway lines must have been removed.

The next part of the walk followed country lanes through villages and farms. The weather provided us with April Showers (acceptable because it is April and this is what we took on), although a couple of times the showers were more like April Deluges, getting us thoroughly soaked.

We took refuge from one of the heavier downpours under a church gateway porch in small town called St Columb Major. In this unlikely spot we got talking to a local lady also taking shelter from the rain. It's so interesting to get small snippets of the lives of the people we are meeting along the way.

By the time the sea came into view as we approached Newquay, the sun had pushed its way through the clouds and we realised we had kept walking for 20 miles without really sitting down.

We are over half way on the walk, with four more days to go.

We got talking to the Landlady, bar staff and some other customers about our walk. The Landlady of the London Inn very kindly donated to the charity fundraising efforts, as did a very nice couple who were at the next table.

It was such a good day for meeting interesting people along the way.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored the walk so far. We're getting towards the half way point of the walk, and the fundraising page will remain open to collect sponsorship money after we have completed the walk. If you would like to donate please go to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/walklandsend

At the start of this day we had spectacular views from Bodmin Moor, which were not even partially visible through the rain of the previous day.

It got better as the day went on, and our damp spirits were lifted when we met the generous people in St Neot and the sun came out.

We left Gulworthy and headed straight into the forest (rainforest, as it turns out). The rain theme continued throughout the day. By the time we'd crossed the River Tamar into Cornwall we had been thoroughly drenched.

Soon after the first soaking we then had a map-based incident. After following a sign post which seemed to make sense for the direction we should have been going, it transpired that it wasn't and sent us on a 3 mile detour which ultimately ended up back at the place we first went astray.

More heavy rain closed in as we climbed 1000 feet to the peak of Kit Hill. And then down the other side to Callington.

Callington is a smallish town so we were lucky to find a shop open on Easter Sunday. We didn't need anything in particular as we'd planned as if nothing would be open. However it was a welcome warm and dry place which contained chocolate.

A medical emergency unfolded in front of us in the road in Callington and Alex's first aid skills came into action . Once the ambulance arrived and the paramedics took over we were on our way again, into the rain for the final 7 miles to Pensilva on the edge of Bodmin Moor.

Being such a wet and 'eventful' day, it meant we didn't take many photos. But here are a couple of grey-looking pictures, of ghostly things appearing through the murkiness.

- - -

Today was hilly and windy but sunny.

Starting with a big climb from Dartmeet, the first 6 miles took us up the moor to the prison town of Princetown (by 'prison town' that means the place where Dartmoor prison is).

Following the trackbed of a former railway line we left Princetown and headed towards Tavistock and onwards to the overnight stopping point of West Gulworthy.

West Gulworthy is a hamlet which is just about still in Devon but we are a stone's throw from the border with Cornwall. Tomorrow Cornwall begins...

19 miles covered today.

There were some fairly almighty ascents to contend with. There's nothing like jumping in at the deep end.

It's all for two fantastic causes, Macmillan Cancer Support and RMH Bristol.

Take a look at the sponsorship page and if you are able to donate to the charities we're supporting with this walk please consider sponsoring the walk. There are plenty more days and a lot of hills still to climb!.

Day one. The walk begins!

Looking at the map for tomorrow it is fairly steadily all uphill for much of the day. We are going to be following the River Dart, from Totnes town up to Buckfastleigh, then on Dartmoor to Dartmeet.

Dartmeet is so named because it is where the East Dart and West Dart tributaries meet and become the (single) Dart. So that's all very exciting.

We are currently somewhere on the A303 driving to Devon. Got that "did I remember to pack my walking boots" kind of feeling, like something crucial has been forgotten.
Driving out of London after work was a fairly torturous experience, with the mass exodus for the bank holiday weekend creating gridlock. It was because of being stuck in a traffic jam that was the reason and inspiration behind wanting to do the walk in the first place. That fateful comment "it would be quicker to walk" which is a horrible cliche, but was just crying out to be acted upon.

It definitely won't be quicker to walk this particular 150 miles to Land's End, but on the other hand it definitely would not be possible to drive this beast of a trek we've got planned. We'll be off-road for as much of the time as it is feasible, which is why the route plan looks a bit wibbly-wobbly in places.

To see where we're going, check out the Route Plan page here: http://2walkto.blogspot.co.uk/p/blog-page.html

The "Track Our Progress" map ( http://2walkto.blogspot.co.uk/p/track-live-progress.html) should update with our latest positions sent by GPS to an app called Viewranger, which in turn gets interpreted by a website called Social Hiking. The Social Hiking map will also grab any social media posts or photos we take and attach them to the nearest position on the map.

Well that's all the pre-walk things to say. Thanks again for following the walk and for sponsoring!

To end this post, here's a photo of Lua the cat helping me pack my bag earlier today by conveniently falling asleep amid the gear, on top of my clothes.

Training Walk on the North Downs

We have been out in the Surrey countryside exploring another part of the North Downs Way. This time we caught the train from London out to Oxted, just outside the M25.

Here is a map of the route (click on the map to zoom in and view the distance, height, average speed etc if you are into that kind of thing!)

This part of the North Downs Way seems to hug the M25 for quite a long way. The countryside around here is absolutely beautiful (ignoring the 8 lanes of roaring traffic where possible!).

We had to cross the motorway a couple of times during the day, and we were never far from it.

Despite the proximity to the M25, at times it was possible to forget it was there. Combined with a beautiful Spring day we were treated to some great views of Surrey.
With only a few weeks to go before the start of our Totnes to Land's End walk, we stepped up the training regime.

We caught the train to Otford in Kent, where the North Downs Way passes the station. We followed the trail east towards Rochester (19 miles).

It was a mild day, but felt hot at times - especially after climbing a big hill. Apparently the high pressure system has trapped air pollution from Europe and dust blown over from the Sahara over Kent and south east England. There was a murky haze of blue-grey throughout the day but we didn't notice any abnormally bad air. On the radio in the morning the news had warned of "stinging eyes" and "difficulty breathing", and maybe as a result of this there were very few people out and about on the trail or in the villages along the way.

After 19 miles of the Downs (mainly Ups) there aren't any aches or pains to report. This is encouraging for our big Totnes to Land's End walk starting on the 18 April.
